The journal provides a forum for scholarly dialogue on a broad range of topics concerning Indian dance. Its concerns are theoretical as well as performative. Textual studies, dance criticism, and the intellectual and interpretative history of Indian dance traditions are its focus. It also publishes performance reviews and covers all major events in the field of dance in India and abroad. We take pride in our painstaking research, the quality of the contents, and the honesty and love with which we sculpt every issue of ours, overcoming all constraints, especially financial.

The twenty-second-year journey of Nartanam has both been rewarding and also arduous – rewarding because a large number of dancers all over the country and abroad find this a convenient platform to acquaint themselves with the latest happenings both in dance scholarship and in performances, and arduous because we compete with an onslaught of electronic and other media and entertainment. However, we have kept our banner flying high. The world-class content and acclaim that Nartanam has garnered in the performing and academic world of dance generate great demand for the journal as it is one of the only kind of Indian classical dances in the world. Most of our issues are completely sold out and there is great demand for a reprint of several past issues like the ones on maestros like Balasraswati, Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai, Uday Shankar, Rukmini Devi, Ananda Coomaraswamy, and our specials on Odissi, Manipuri, Kathakali, Mohiniattam, Bharatanatyam, Kuchipui, Kathak and others. In fact, each issue is a collector’s item valued by scholars, students, and dancers alike.
